COMMANDER DENISE J. MCCALLACREARY UNITED STATES NAVY RETIRED

Commander Denise Jacqueline McCallaCreary is the Honorary Consul designate representing the Government of Jamaica in Northern California, a designation she received in 2025. In this volunteer diplomatic role, she supports Jamaican nationals, promotes cultural and economic engagement, and strengthens the longstanding relationship between Jamaica and communities throughout Northern California.

A native of Kingston, Jamaica, Commander McCallaCreary attended Saint Francis Primary School (Nonspen) and Merl Grove High School before immigrating to the United States. She enlisted in the United States Naval Reserve in October 1973 and later entered full-time military service after earning a Bachelor of Arts in Business Management and Spanish from Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago.

She was commissioned as an Ensign in the United States Navy in November 1979 following her selection for Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island. During her distinguished naval career, she held a variety of leadership and policy positions including Public Affairs Officer at Naval Air Station Bermuda; Assistant Head, Family Housing Plans and Policy Division and the Navy worldwide Housing Inspection Team Officer at the Bureau of Naval Personnel in Washington, D.C.; Administrative Officer and Director of the Family Service Center at Naval Air Station Moffett Field; Director of the Family Service Center at Naval Station Treasure Island; and Commanding Officer of the Naval Transient Personnel Unit, Treasure Island.

Commander McCallaCreary also served at U.S. Central Command at MacDill Air Force Base, Tampa, Florida, as Navy/Marine Corps Branch Chief and Navy Element Executive Officer. She later served as Director, Curricular Officer in the National Security Affairs Department at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. She retired from the United States Navy in November 2000 after 27 years of distinguished service.

Her military education includes a Master of Science in Transportation Management from the Naval Postgraduate School and a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College. She is also a graduate of the Senior Class of the Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Virginia.

Her military decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (with gold star), Joint Service Achievement Medal, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Navy Reserve Meritorious Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal (with bronze star), Humanitarian Service Medal, and the Navy/Marine Corps Overseas Service Ribbon.

A respected community leader, Commander McCallaCreary is a Past National President of the National Naval Officers Association (NNOA), where she made history as the organization’s first female president in its 49-year history. She is also the first female recipient of the NNOA Dorie Miller Lifetime Achievement Award.

Her civic leadership includes service as Immediate Past President and Chief Executive Officer of the Jamaican American Association of Northern California (JAANC), and service on the Board of the National Association of Jamaican Supportive Organizations, Inc. (NAJASO). She has also served on the Jamaican Diaspora Crime Task Force in their early years and the Mayor of San Jose’s Project Diversity Screening Commission. She remains active in community engagement, runs a home-based business distributing Jamaican patties to Caribbean restaurants in Northern California and is a Division Leader in Primerica, Incorporated.

Commander McCallaCreary resides in Northern California with her husband, Trevor Anthony Creary, a Calabar High School alumnus and 1974 Jamaica Independence Post-Graduate Scholar. They have three children Karlene, Christopher and Matthew and son-in-law Johannes Laznicka.
